Released in 2005, this French film was nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe awards for Best Foreign Film. This is not a typical Christmas film. There are no reindeer, sleighs, elves, tinsel, Christmas lights, or laughing children. It is not a movie for small children.
The film is based on real events that occurred during the Christmas season of 1914 when a wide-spread series of informal and unauthorized cease-fires spontaneously occurred in the trenches along the Western Front. Joyeux Noel dramatizes one such unofficial cease-fire among Scottish, French, and German soldiers.
